Here in Nebraska, we're as far away from the ocean as you can get. That doesn't mean that our waterside recreation is anything but fantastic, though. This enormous lake has sandy beaches that will make you think you're sitting on a faraway beach while you enjoy all of your favorite outdoor activities.

...Sailing, swimming, camping on the beach, and just relaxing in the sun are some of your options. And one of the best parts is that you won't have to worry about tidal waves or sharks!
The beach is pretty busy during the summer and fall months, but there are often little places of solitude where you can go to just be alone with your thoughts (or your fishing pole).
Like any good beach, there are a number of stores and restaurants nearby to provide everything you might need for your beach day. There's plenty of lodging nearby if camping on the beach isn't your scene.
The beach at Lake McConaughy is also used for events and fun gatherings throughout the warm months. The annual Kites & Castles event is always a great time. You can even view the castles from the water at the Kayak the Castles group float.
This huge lake and its beautiful beach are truly a Nebraska treasure. Sure, we're far away from the ocean, but we still know how to have an epic beach day!

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L. Why I Love It: Fact: Airplanes are notoriously dry, dry, dry. No matter how much water I drink both before and during the flight, I always find myself in a hydration deficit for days. If you were to ask anyone who's never been to Nebraska in their lives what they think it's like, what do you think they'd say? Probably something to the effect of... corn. Lots of corn. And yes, we might be the Cornhusker State, but we're also so much more than that. As it turns out, there are numerous incredible places in Nebraska to do, see, and experience. Every one of them is worth it.

Did you know that Nebraska is home to more than 2,000 natural lakes - and many man-made ones, too? It's true - the Sandhills alone are home to a couple thousand bodies of water, which ebbs and flows (pun intended) depending on the season and groundwater supply. Take, for example, the gorgeous lake located at the Calamus Reservoir located nearly smack-dab in the center of the state. It's crisp, clean, and cool year-round - the perfect Nebraskan escape.
Crafted by the erection of the earthen Virginia Smith Dam in 1985, this incredible body of water consists of an impressive 5,142 acres, with 31 miles of pristine shoreline and soft, warm sand perfect for sinking toes into.
The water is consistently clean and clear, with visibility far down into its depths on the clearest days. Fishing and boating are popular activities, with a number of sporting fish available for catching (my personal favorite is the rainbow trout, but your mileage may vary. Interestingly, the Calamus State Fish Hatchery is located nearby, on the southernmost tip of the lake, and it's fun to visit if you ever find yourself in the area.
