One of the things Wyoming is known for is the abundance of hot springs throughout the state, but not everyone knows that the same scalding hot water that feeds those luxuriant mineral baths also makes terrific natural therapeutic saunas. In fact, a water park in Thermopolis has made the most out of one of the springs nearby, carving a cave into the hillside to create an awesome steam room. Even hotter than the pools, Vapor Cave is the perfect place to take the chill off during cold fall and winter days, and a great spot to steam away stress and anything else that ails you any time of year.
Locals and visitors flock to Star Plunge in Thermopolis year round to enjoy the indoor and outdoor "warm" pools, as well as the hotter Jacuzzis and the water slides.
The swimming pools are usually somewhere between 90 and 98 degrees Fahrenheit, and the whirlpools are around 104 degrees.
While those attractions are always popular, one of the best parts of Star Plunge is tucked away in the hillside.
"Vapor Cave" is a steam room created by hollowing out a grotto in the hill right around a natural flow of geothermal water.
Inside the cave, a fountain of hot mineral water bubbles up from the depths of the Earth, pouring steam into the air and heating the room. Benches line the wall surrounding the font to allow you to sit or lay down while you soak in all the benefits of the healing water.
Steam rooms are beneficial for many health issues such as breathing ailments (asthma and bronchitis, for example), and spending time in a steam bath can increase your metabolism as well as help rid your body of toxins.
Strips of plastic hang down in the entrance to keep the steam in and the temperature up.
That's why, if the pools and the hot tubs aren't warm enough for you, Vapor Cave is your best bet for turning up the heat.
Though Star Plunge makes it a priority to keep the temperature in Vapor Cave at least 108 degrees, the actual average is around 109 - and it's even been known to get as hot as 118 degrees Fahrenheit.
