Once the holidays pass, winter in Wisconsin stretches out ahead of us and it feels like there's no end in sight. We've got months more of this snowy, cold landscape and we have no choice but to embrace and enjoy it. You can go stir-crazy if you never head outside in the winter. Even those who aren't the outdoorsy, hiking type will love this winter activity. Up in Marshfield, there's a zoo where admission is free and where animals are just as active in the winter as in summer months. Did we mention that it's in a totally gorgeous setting that looks a bit magical covered in snow? The Wildwood Zoo is the perfect way to spend a winter day. Your family will love that you don't have to fight for space and you can watch the animals for as long as you wish. It's well worth bundling up to get some fresh air and enjoy this spectacular Wisconsin gem.
Located in Wildwood Park since the turn of the 20th century, Wildwood Zoo is a delightful spot that's perfect for spending a few hours. Covering more than 60 acres, it's even got a part that can be driven through, for when you need to warm up your toes a bit.
Wildwood Zoo is home to numerous different animals, all native to North America, so they are used to the cold and snow and flourish here.
There are Kodiak bears, cougars, fox, wolves, and lynx, birds, prairie dogs, elk, bison and tons of unofficial zoo animals that live here, from squirrels to geese.
The zoo is open from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. daily from November 1 to March 31. You and your family are invited to wander around and enjoy these animals enjoying the winter. You'll find bears frolicking in the snow, cats burrowing in it and elk pretty much ignoring it.
It's always fun to spend Valentine's Day at the zoo as the animals receive presents full of some of their favorite snacks.
Who can resist these gorgeous, curious faces enjoying their Valentine treats?
This bear is all ready for his close-up and looks ready to give a smooch, as well, after devouring his holiday treat.
Turtles, foxes, bats, bees, falcons, eagles, cranes and more join the bigger animals and all of them survive and thrive in the cold and snow. We tend to think of the zoo as a warm-weather activity, but there's something so amazing about having the space to roam at will and spend as much time as you'd like observing these gorgeous animals.
We promise you won't mind the cold, and your kids will be too enamored and entertained to even notice. This is the perfect way to get out of the house, soak up some Vitamin D, and figure out a way to be a little less sick of the same four walls at home.
But best of all, Wildwood Zoo is free. Donations are accepted and used to maintain this amazing hidden gem in the middle of the state. But even if you drop in a few dollars for each family member, this is an inexpensive, unique and fabulously fun way to spend a morning or afternoon. The animals are delightful and not at all afraid of the snow or cold, so you don't have to worry they'll all be tucked away and unseen.
Even avoiding some odd January rain didn't send this critter too far. Wildwood Zoo is a perfect place to learn about conservation, survival and diversity of wildlife. You and your family will learn a lot while having an unforgettable winter afternoon you never imagined could be possible.
Wildwood Zoo is located at 608 W 17th St., Marshfield, WI 54449. You can find out more about this awesome free attraction on their website or by checking out their Facebook page.
