This remarkable trail is part of a much larger natural legacy. The Ice Age Trail is a National Scenic Trail that stretches 1,200 miles across Wisconsin. Devil's Doorway, is a two-mile loop trail near Baraboo, Wisconsin. Though this path is technically not part of the Ice Age Trail, it's just a tenth of a mile shy and has become unofficially part of that stretch.
The trail gets its name from a series of elaborate rock formations, including one dubbed "Devil's Doorway" that looks out over Devil's Lake. While all these devilish names may sound nefarious, we promise the trail isn't haunted.
The trail is marked as hard on AllTrails, but the stunning views of the lake and the surrounding terrain make it worth the effort. In every season, you'll notice a new angle and a new view of these natural state monuments.
The trail is dubbed hard because it's steep and rocky, but most hikers note that it is well maintained and can be utilized year round. Just be careful in the slippery snow!
The rock formations are likely the remnants of glacial movement. Scientists suspect it was formed by water freezing and thawing in the quartzite.
In addition to the rock formations, often noted as some of the most interesting in Wisconsin, this trail offers beautiful views overlooking Devil's Lake.
After your hike consider taking advantage of some of the recreation around the lake. A refreshing swim, boat ride, or lakeshore picnic may be just what you need after a difficult hike.
Some hikes are worth the strenuous climb, and the Devil's Doorway Trail in Wisconsin is absolutely one of them. At the end of the trail, you'll be rewarded with beautiful views, ancient and fascinating rock formations, and a cool lake ready for a swim.
