For a fun-filled evening, mark your calendars for the Sunflower and Firefly Festival at Creek Bed Country Farmacy on Aug. 1, 2020, from noon to 8 p.m. This lively event offers an immersion into a sea of vibrant blooms, but that’s not all. Editor's note: The Sunflower celebration at the farm is now part of the outstanding fall celebration. The juicy peaches are now the item in August for pick-your-own or pre-pick. Either way, plenty of reasons exist to visit this lovely farm in Wisconsin.
Every summer for the past several years, Creek Bed Country Farmacy in Poynette has hosted the Sunflower and Firefly Festival – and this year is no different.
The cheery, can’t-miss event is scheduled for Saturday, August 1st from 12 p.m. – 8 p.m. Admission is just $8 per person and includes one free sunflower. (Festival-goers under 3 are free.)
Creek Bed Country Farmacy specializes in oilseed sunflowers, which unlike ornamental sunflowers, only bloom for about 12 days, so it’s during the fest that the sunflowers are at their best.
And best might be an understatement. The spectacular sea of sunflowers is truly a sight to behold, which means a camera is a must when attending the festival.
Due to COVID-19, there are a few changes to the festival this year. For one, visitors will park in the grass parking lot, which is south of the animal display. Also, hayrides will only be used for transporting elderly and disabled visitors to and from the parking lot.

Can’t make it to the festival? No problem; Creek Bed Country Farmacy will remain open every day the sunflowers are in bloom (approximately August 2nd - August 7th). This information will be updated on the farm’s Facebook, so make sure to check its page prior to your visit. Admission on non-festival days is $3 per person. Visitors 3 and under are free.

In a state as beautiful as Wisconsin, we have no shortage of incredible natural wonders (or manmade "wonders," for that matter). Well, I'm here to add one more to your bucket list: Crex Meadows Wildlife Area. It's a a hidden gem natural wonder in Wisconsin, near the Minnesota border, and if you're a lover of wildlife, it should be on your must-visit list.
You'll find Crex Meadows State Wildlife Area in northwestern Wisconsin's Burnett County, just north of the charming community of Grantsburg. The area is a 30,000-acre expanse of wetlands and forests, as well as pine and oak barrens, that is further surrounded by additional protected natural areas, including the Governor Knowles State Forest, Reed Lake Meadow State Natural Area, and Norway Point Bottomlands State Natural Area.
Crex Meadows's unique combination of location and topography makes it haven for wildlife - both migratory and year-round residents. It's perhaps best known for its large flocks of sandhill cranes, which use Crex Meadows as a staging area during their spring and fall migrations, although Crex Meadows is also a key refuge for several important native habitats, such as sedge meadows and pine/oak barrens, relied on by wildlife for food and cover.
In additions to birds and plants, you'll find many species of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and insects that make their homes at Crex Meadows.
Observing wildlife at Crex Meadows doesn't have to be a stationary endeavor. There are several miles in the area's trail system, including two miles at Hay Creek (map available on AllTrails Plus), more than three miles at Upper Phantom, and many additional miles of hunting and official trails in the refuge. In winter, the trails are perfect for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. There's also a road system at Crex that allows for getting out and looking for wildlife when the weather's less than pleasant.

There's also a year-round visitor center at the wildlife area, where you'll find exhibits, a library, and an auditorium. Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L.
