Sometimes, it’s too hot or too cold or you’re just too tired to get out and explore the Badger State by foot. Whatever the reason, there’s a great alternative – a scenic drive in Wisconsin. Luckily, the state is home to some amazing routes that are brimming with wonderful windshield views. And just to get you out on the road a bit quicker, we’ve narrowed down the options and put together a list of five scenic county roads in Wisconsin that are sure to deliver as far as stunning scenery goes. Take a look:
1. Kettle Moraine Scenic Drive
If you've lived in Wisconsin for an extended period of time, you know all about the incredible (and massive) Kettle Moraine area. But did you know that you can take a 115-mile scenic country road right through it? A variety of outstanding geology awaits along the southeastern Wisconsin route. And if you ride it in its entirety, you will actually go through six Wisconsin counties! Hey, don't take our word for it - just look at these awesome shots.
2. Route 42 In Door County
Ladies and gentleman, do not attempt to drive this road if you have indulged in Wisconsin cherry wine. (And just a heads up, if you think this road is straight, you are definitely drunk.) This might be the most unusual road in Wisconsin, and you'll definitely want to use caution when traversing it. Navigating the curvy roadway is well worth the effort, though, as it leads to some of the best parts of Door County, making it one of the top scenic drives in Wisconsin.
3. Upper Mississippi River Valley
For those of you who hang out in eastern Wisconsin, you are missing some of the best views in the state. I'm talking about the vistas of the Upper Mississippi. Wow, just check out these river views! Highway 35, which is more commonly known as the Great River Road, is a famous roadway in Wisconsin about 250 miles from Prescott in the north to Kieler in the south. Easily one of the best road trips in Wisconsin, the route is brimming with incredible history, breathtaking bluff-top vistas, fantastic trails, dozens of picturesque river towns, and much, much more.
4. Lake Superior Scenic Byway
If you follow Highway 13, you will end up in Bayfield, a harbor town that's as cute as can be. The Apostle Islands are one of the area's most famous sites and a must-see. You can also take Highway 13 west to to the Brule River State Forest, which is one of the most gorgeous state forests in all of Wisconsin.
5. Wisconsin River/Baraboo Hills Tour
Start in Lodi and take Highway 113 for an unforgettable journey that'll lead you over the (Wisconsin) river and through the woods before coming to an end at Devil's Lake State Park. During the fall, this is easily the most scenic country road in Wisconsin.
