Situated on Stockton Island, reaching Julian Bay Beach in Wisconsin requires a 16-mile ferry ride; however, the effort is completely worth it since it’s probably one of the most stunning beaches you’ll ever see. The 1.5-mile beach isn’t only beautiful, but it’s also incredibly unique since the sand barks. Yep, you read that right. When dry, the sand has a distinctive audible quality.
Accessing this beach, which is situated at the bottom of Lion’s Den Gorge in Wisconsin, requires a bit of a hike. The two-mile round-trip trek will take you through wetlands and woodlands before traversing a wooden staircase that leads down the gorge and straight to a beach, which offers roughly one mile of Lake Michigan shoreline. At the sprawling 2,903-acre Point Beach State Forest in Wisconsin, you’ll find about six miles of undeveloped beach on Lake Michigan – but that’s not all. There are also hiking trails and the Rawley Point Lighthouse.
A true small-town gem, this 160-acre park boasts lots of perks, including a 16,000-acre lake and beach. In addition to swimming, the lake is perfect for boating, water skiing, fishing, and canoeing. Park-goers will also have access to a playground and campsites with fire rings and picnic tables.
Located on the shores of Lake Ripley, this small town park is the perfect place to enjoy a day at the beach. And while the park is just 18 acres, it’s brimming with amenities that are sure to keep the whole family entertained. As soon as I dipped my paddle, I knew we were somewhere very special. The Willow Flowage is a wild world of little bays and islands, and it’s accessible to anyone who loves experiencing nature. I recently enjoyed a kayak trip into the Willow Flowage, and it was even better than I expected. We traced quiet bays and islands, and I felt like I was deep in the Wisconsin wilderness, even though I was not very far from home. Here’s what I found at this Wisconsin paddling destination.

The Willow Flowage is a large, beautiful reservoir that’s located in western Oneida County.
This area has a long history - Native Americans paddled these waters long before European settlers arrived, and in the 1700s, there was a trading post near here.
We encountered a couple of fishing boats as we paddled downriver, but soon found ourselves alone.
This place has a very wild and remote feel. We passed some of the remote campsites and wished we had a tent and sleeping bags along – we could easily spend some time here.

We saw a lot of wildlife – balds eagles and ducks always seemed to be in view.
A kayak is a great way to explore this place, as you can easily poke around the shallows. We went ashore on one of the islands and explored a bit. Then we waded into the reservoir’s cool waters.
Continuing on, we paddled through more bays and islands of the Willow Flowage Scenic Waters.
There was so much to explore that we barely scratched the surface of this place. We’re already planning another voyage!
