Many people do not know that part of the North Country Trail runs through Wisconsin. I suppose I should back up first and explain what the North Country trail even is. In the United States, there are only 11 national scenic trails. One is entirely contained in Wisconsin (the Ice Age). The North Country trail, however, runs from New York to North Dakota. Wow, that covers a lot of ground. And you can walk the part that is in Wisconsin.
Wisconsin actually has the highest percentage of the trail that is recognized by the National Park Service.
A lot of the trail is undeveloped, but more is becoming developed each year.
The trail runs through Penokee Mountain Range.
You might encounter strutting or bugling of elk, reintroduced in this area.
Wind around bluffs surrounding the Bois Brule River.
Walk along the Brule Bog boardwalk (try saying that 10 times fast).
It is 3900 feet long and goes through a cedar bog environment.

If you follow the trail, you eventually hit St. Croix National Scenic Riverways, one of only three national parks on the trail.
And eventually you end up at Big Manitou Falls, the highest falls in the state.
