There’s nothing more mesmerizing than a giant waterfall, which is why people around the world travel to the grand and breathtaking views of Niagara Falls. You can experience some waterfall magic without a long road trip east.d Wisconsin has its own gorgeous waterfall – while it might seem like a baby falls compared to Niagara, it’s a big and wild waterfall that will take your breath away. Here’s why you need to head to Wisconsin’s Big Manitou Falls.
You’ll find Big Manitou Falls in far northern Wisconsin. The waterfall is located in Pattison State Park in Douglas County, about 13 miles south of the city of Superior.
The waterfall is located on the Black River, a tributary of the Nemadji River. You can reach the trail on foot via the Big Manitou Falls Trail.
The sight is stunning. Over thousands of years, after the glaciers retreated from Wisconsin, the river carved a deep gorge out of the sandstone and basalt rock.
The waterfall is huge and dramatic. With a drop of 165 feet, it's the tallest waterfall in Wisconsin and the fourth-highest east of the Rocky Mountains.
Native Americans said they could hear the voice of the Great Spirit in the roaring, plunging water of the falls. They called the falls “Gitchee Manitou.”
The waterfall draws large numbers of visitors every year and when you see it, you’ll know why. The land it's on was designated a state park in 1920, and in 2003 it was named an official state natural area.
Pattison State Park is open from 6 a.m. - 11 p.m. daily. A vehicle admission sticker is required to enter the park. The park has some nice hiking trails, but you won’t have to walk very far to get a good look at the falls. Learn more about the park here.
