Wisconsin’s state parks are brimming with beauty; there’s no doubt about it. However, they’re not the only locales that are easy on the eyes. Natural areas are another great way to experience Mother Nature’s finest works. That’s especially the case with Houghton Falls Nature Preserve, which boasts a gorge, cliffs, waterfalls, and more.
Houghton Falls Nature Preserve is tucked away in the tiny town of Washburn.
The 76-acre natural area is probably most known for its namesake 20-foot waterfall. Spring is typically the best time to view the waterfall since it’s only visible after heavy rainfall.
But don’t let the waterfall’s flow determine whether or not you visit.
The preserve is full of striking sights, including Echo Dells, a picturesque sandstone gorge that was named for its cathedral-like acoustics, which echo like crazy.
The true treasure of the preserve, Echo Dells is from the Precambrian period, which is the earliest part of Earth’s history!
In addition to immense history, Echo Dells is brimming with beauty. Putting the “gorge” in gorgeous, the dells feature a series of water-carved cliffs, caves, small falls, and scenic pools.
A 1-mile-long path follows the gorge, making it easy to explore. When meandering along the path, don’t forget to give a shout, so you can test out the acoustics for which the area was named.
The trail comes to an end at 30-foot cliffs, which overlook Lake Superior.
There are a few things to keep in mind when visiting Houghton Falls Nature Preserve. First, visitors are asked to stay on the official trail to prevent vegetation loss, erosion, etc.
Secondly, the preserve’s gates are locked promptly at closing time, so it’s important to be mindful of operating hours. And finally, if the parking lot is full, visitors are asked to return at a later time, rather than park on the street, which is prohibited.
Steeped in history and natural beauty, Houghton Falls Nature Preserve is easily one of Mother Nature’s most majestic creations. For more information on the Houghton Falls Nature Preserve, check out the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources website.
