It’s not just looks that can be deceiving. Sometimes, names can be a bit misleading. That’s surely the case with Devil’s Punchbowl. The moniker in no way hints at the site’s awesomeness; however, that’s exactly what it is – awesome! Take a look.
Don’t let the name fool you; Devil’s Punchbowl in Menomonie is a geologic wonder that’s brimming with idyllic beauty!
A prime spot for an outdoor excursion, the nature preserve is basically a mini-ecosystem – complete with cliffs, waterfalls, underground springs, and other incredible natural features.
In the 1990s, Devil’s Punchbowl was deemed a “scientific study area.” However, the area’s history goes back much further.
The massive sandstone formations that comprise Devil’s Punchbowl are about 500 million years in the making!
Its history also includes several name changes. The area’s first official moniker was Black’s Ravine, which references Samuel Black, the first owner of the land.
Eventually, the name was changed to Paradise Valley and then, finally, to Devil’s Punchbowl. Though the origin of the name is unknown, some believe it’s inspired by the mascot of the nearby University of Wisconsin–Stout.
Presently owned by the West Wisconsin Land Trust, Devil's Punchbowl is open to the public year-round.
A great visit any time of year, the landscape transforms with each season. Visit in the summer and spring, and you’ll find Devil’s Punchbowl brimming with lush greenery and rare flora.
In the fall, there’s vibrant foliage, and during winter, blankets of snow and fantastic frozen sights.
The 0.7-mile out-and-back trail makes it easy to explore Devil’s Punchbowl and leads to some of the area’s best features, including the waterfall.
Not too difficult, the trail is rated “good for all skill levels,” making it a great choice for hikers of varying ages and abilities.
