Nobody likes paying taxes, but they're hard to escape. There are obviously some places that pay more in taxes than others. Here are the 10 counties in West Virginia where property taxes are the lowest, according to tax-rates.org. The website looked at the average amount of property taxes collected in each county.
For comparison's sake, Jefferson County collects the most in property taxes, at $1,379 per year for a home worth the median value of $255,800. That's about .54 percent of a home's assessed value.
Here are the counties that collect the lowest property taxes, in no particular order.
1. McDowell County - Median property tax: $244.
McDowell County has one of the lowest tax rates not only in West Virginia, but in the country. It collects a median of $244 from home owners, for a home worth a median of $32,800. The yearly property tax amounts to about .74 percent of a property’s value.
2. Summers County - Median property tax: $262
Summers County collects a median of $262 per year for a home worth the median value of $74,100. That amounts to about .35 percent of a property’s value.
3. Wyoming County - Median property tax: $304
Wyoming County, too, has one of the lowest property taxes in the country. The county collects a median amount of $304 per year for a home worth a median amount of $59,300. The county collects on average .51 percent of a property’s value.
4. Webster County - Median property tax: $235.
Webster County collects a median of $235 per year for a home worth a median value of about $58,500. That amounts to about .04 percent of a property’s value.
5. Roane County - Median property tax: $299.
The median property tax in Roane County is $299 per year for a home worth the median value of $75,000. It amounts to an average 0.4 percent of a property’s value.
6. Tucker County - Median property tax: $330.
Residents of Tucker County pay a median amount of $330 per year for a home worth a median of $87,900. That amounts to about .38 percent of a property’s value.
7. Calhoun County - Median property tax: $297.
Calhoun collects a median of $297 per year for a home worth the median value of $71,200. The county’s median tax rate is .42 percent.
8. Barbour County - Median property tax: $324.
The median property tax in Barbour County is $324 per year and the median value of a home is $80,300. The county collects on average, 0.4 percent of a property’s assessed fair market value as a property tax.
9. Randolph County - Median property tax: $332.
Randolph County collects on average .35 percent of a property’s value. The median amount collected is $332 per year for a home worth a median value of $94,100.
10. Pocahontas County - Median property tax: $320.
Pocahontas County collects a median of $320 per year for a home worth the median value of $100,000. The county collects, on average, 0.32% of a property's value.
