As a native West Virginian, one of my memories from growing up is swimming in fishing holes and rivers with my friends and family. To me, there isn't anything better than a boat full of people that you love jumping into a river and swimming around. If there is something better, I have yet to discover it. Listed below are fifteen of the MANY rivers in our beautiful mountain state.
1) The Blackwater River is a 34 mile long river along the Allegheny Mountains. The Blackwater River gives life to the magnificent Blackwater Falls, located in Davis, WV.
2) The Bluestone River, which is a part of the Mississippi River watershed, is approximately 77 miles long.
3) The Cacapon River, which is roughly 81 miles long, is located in the Appalachian Mountains of our Eastern Panhandle. This river has amazing scenery and great fishing.
4) The Cheat River is a tributary of the Monongahela River, both of which are a part of the Mississippi River watershed. The Cheat River is about 78 miles long.
5) The Cranberry River is about 24 miles long, and it is a tributary of the Gauley River.
6) The Gauley River is most famous for being a great river to whitewater raft on! Contrary to this picture, this 105 mile long river gets pretty wild!
7) The Greenbrier River is roughly 173 miles long, and it is a tributary of the New River.
8) The Guyandotte River is in the neighborhood of 166 miles long. Look at those amazing fall colors along this beautiful river!
9) The Holly River is about 3.9 miles, the Left Fork Holly River is about 24.1 miles long, so 28 miles all together.
10) The Kanawha River flows for about 97 miles through many cities, including Charleston, Point Pleasant, St. Albans, South Charleston, and many more!
11) The Monongahela River, which is roughly 130 miles long, is along the Allegheny Plateu in West Virginia and Pennsylvania.
12) The New River, which is most famous for the vehicular bridge over top of it, flows for about 320 miles through North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia.
13) The Potomac River, which is one of the largest rivers in America, is roughly 405 miles long. It only flows through the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia.
14) The Shenandoah River is a tributary of the Potomac River.
It is 55 miles long.
15) The Valley Falls along the Tygart Valley River, which is a tributary of the Monogahela River.
This river is approximately 135 miles long.
This list could have gone on forever! These amazing rivers all flow through our beautiful state at one point or another, and we are so lucky! These rivers are so magnificent!
