This Waterfall Staircase Hike May Be The Most Unique In All Of West Virginia
The Falls of Hills Creek Scenic Area in Richwood features the tallest waterfall in the state, accessible via a series of staircases through dense woods.
Some waterfalls are fairly easy to reach, while others require a bit of a vertical hike. And this one hike up several staircases leads you to the tallest waterfall in the state.
The Falls of Hills Creek Scenic Area, located in Richwood, leads to three amazing waterfalls, one of which is the highest in the entire state.
The first fall you will encounter is reached by a handicap accessible boardwalk and drops from a height of 25 feet. From this point forward, the hike requires a climb up a series of wooden steps to the second waterfall, which is 45 feet.
From there you will continue along a dirt path and encounter a metal staircase to the final waterfall, which drops from a height of 63 feet, the tallest in the West Virginia.
Along the way, you will encounter two viewing decks, such as this one, overlooking the river rapids. The 114-acre scenic area will offer you some beautiful views and an excellent opportunity for some great photos. However, the website does recommend you take your hike between 12:00 p.m. and 2 p.m. because the limited light at the lowest levels of the path, hidden deep in the woods, will receive the brightest light during that period.

Clocking in at 35 feet, Douglas Falls is one of our favorite waterfalls in West Virginia in the winter. Even though the waterfall isn't technically frozen in the picture above, its surroundings are really working double time to make this photo a winter wonderland. The hike to Douglas Falls is about half a mile and is considered a fairly easy route. Of course, if you’re hiking to this waterfall in the winter, you’ll want to make sure you’ve got some good hiking boots.
If you’re visiting Blackwater Falls, then you need to make Elakala Falls a sidequest. This beautiful waterfall in West Virginia is near the famous Blackwater Falls. This is one waterfall that's worth coming back every season for.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L.
