Blackwater Falls in Davis is one of West Virginia's most beautiful off-the-beaten-path gems. It's a must-visit attraction no matter what season it is. Read on to find out what makes these falls special:
Blackwater Falls is the namesake of Blackwater Falls State Park in Davis. The falls are named for the amber-colored water that falls five stories to the bottom.
The water gets its color from the tannic acid in fallen hemlock and red spruce needles.
With a 62 foot drop, Blackwater Falls is known as the highest above-ground waterfalls in the state (there are higher waterfalls in caves, though).
The water flows through the eight-mile canyon at the park, which is also a beautiful sight to behold.
Blackwater Falls is one of the most photographed sights in West Virginia. You can find its image on calendars, stationery, advertisements and even jigsaw puzzles.
Blackwater Falls is not the only waterfall in the park; there are also the smaller Elakala Falls and Pendleton Falls, which are accessible by trail.
Though they aren't in this picture, the falls will often freeze over completely in the winter.
The major ledge of the waterfall is made up of Connoquenessing sandstone of the Middle Pottsville Formation.
Oral tradition says that explorer and hunter Meshach Browning (1781–1859) was the first settler to discover the falls, but there's no documented evidence to suggest that.
Blackwater Falls is truly a magnificent sight. Interested in visiting the park? Get directions here. The park has ample parking and no entrance fees.
