Upon first glance, it's pleasantly straightforward why this waterfall park in West Virginia is easily one of the best (and among the most hidden) waterfall parks in the Mountain State. Valley Falls is located along the Tygart River outside of Fairmont and features a set of never-ending cascading waterfalls that meander through the valley for a half mile.
Cold weather visits bring what seems to be exceptionally blue water on the park's most prominent set of cascades which span the entire width of the river.
Nearly two centuries ago, in the early 1800s, a small community was located along the falls at the very spot where Valley Falls State Park rests.
The remains of an old grist mill are the only evidence that lingers from the old ghost town that used to be here.
In 1964, West Virginia cleaned up the site and opened Valley Falls State Park, which boasts 1,145 acres along the waterfall-rich river.
The day use park offers 18 miles of trails; some are for hiking, while others are for biking. Picnic areas, including a group shelter, turn this park into the ultimate family day trip where everyone can unplug and reconnect with nature in the wilds of wonderful West Virginia.
Along the banks of Valley Falls, swimming is not allowed — but gawking is! If you walk on the huge boulders that line the falls, please remember to look down at your feet occasionally and to avoid any boulders that look wet — they may be slippery.
Have you ever visited this under-appreciated waterfall park in the Mountain State? We'd love to hear how much you loved it!
