For many people, the symbolic start of the Christmas season occurs when the town switches on the lights of the community Christmas tree. You won't want to miss these tree-lighting ceremonies, or the visits from Santa and other festivities.
1. Martinsburg
The tree lighting will be Friday, December 2nd, at 6:00pm. The town will be decorated, carolers will walk the street, and the church bells will peal holiday tunes. Santa will be at the Community Christmas tree giving out goody bags for the children.
2. Shepherdstown
The town tree lighting will take place Friday, November 26th at McMurran Hall at 6:15 PM. Get there early at 6 to hear Mrs. Claus read "How the Grinch Stole Christmas." After the tree lighting, Santa will arrive. There will also be a bonfire on King Street, and a Kiwanis Chili & Cornbread Fundraiser at the War Memorial Building.
3. Ranson
The Mayor and Santa Claus will light the tree the Saturday, November 25th at
Lancaster ("Ranson") Circle. There will be festivities from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Guests can enjoy a horse drawn wagon ride, visiting with Santa, and listening to area school groups perform. Kids can meet Santa and Mrs. Claus, the Grinch, Cindy Lou Who, Elsa, Frosty the Snowman, and Batman and Batgirl with the Batmobile.
4. Hurricane
The tree lighting will take place on December 10th. There will be a chorus performance starting at 4:30, followed by a parade, then the tree lighting, and finally, visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus and their reindeer at the gazebo. For more information call 304-562-5896.
5. Charles Town
The tree lighting will take place on Friday, November 25th at 7:00 PM. There will be a reading of "The Night Before Christmas" by Santa, and the Washington High School Choir will be singing Christmas carols.
