Beaches in West Virginia are few and far between since it's not a coastal state. However, we do have several large lakes with beachy areas, and if you're looking for a beach with clear water in West Virginia, well then look no further than Sutton Lake. This hidden gem is one of the most beautiful swimming spots in the state and is easily worth a road trip from any corner of the state. Let's take a closer look at this hidden beach in West Virginia.
Located just upstream of Sutton is a 1,520-acre reservoir called Sutton Lake. Located in both Webster and Braxton Counties, the lake began construction in 1956 and was completed in 1961.
Adjacent to the large marina is a small beach, its white pristine sands sparkling in the sun in contrast to the bright blue water surrounding it, and the greener waters hugging the beach itself within the safety ring for swimmers. This has to be one of the most beautiful beaches in West Virginia.
The beach itself is a circular outcropping of land thrust into the waters of the lake. Visitors to the beach are welcome to swim in the waters or to lay down a beach towel and soak in the rays of the sun.
Around the beach is a safety ring that marks the designated swimming area for visitors, to protect them and keep them separated from boaters that will pass the swimming area at any given time. Since the beach is immediately adjacent to the marina, the possibility of passing motorboats is pretty much guaranteed.
And if at any point you feel like moving through the water faster than your limbs can manage, a quick walk to the marina is all it takes to rent your own boat, canoe, paddleboard, etc. You can even rent a houseboat if you so wish.
All this can be accomplished at the Sutton Lake Marina, which also sells fishing equipment, bait, snacks, drinks, and various marine supplies.
During your visit to Sutton Lake, an afternoon on the beach is only one of many things you can do at the lake, as the beach is only a small portion of the 44 miles of shoreline surrounding the lake. It's certainly one of the most beautiful places in West Virginia.
Aside from fishing and boating, there are three campgrounds adjacent to the lake, two of which have boat ramps.
But the lake is an exceptionally superior spot for avid anglers; it hosts more than 60 bass tournaments annually. Crappie are another breed of fish in plentiful supply at the lake. All the while, you can take in the beautiful view of the lush hills mirrored in the glassy surface of the water.
If you are looking for a great at the beach and any other number of water-related activities, especially fishing, Sutton Lake is the perfect place for you. And it has one of the best beaches in WV.
Sutton Lake is located at 1734 Bee Run Rd. in Sutton.
