Rivers abound in West Virginia. They're part of what makes this state so beautifully diverse. One of the most well-known of our rivers is the New River, of the New River Gorge National Park fame. And if it's that river you've come to see, one of the best ways to do so is along the longest scenic riverside drive in the New River Gorge National Park, which leads to a magnificent surprise.
The New River is a world-class natural wonder in more ways than one. Ancient, historic, beautiful: this river is a nature lover's paradise.
And one of the best ways to enjoy it is via a leisurely drive down the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve's only scenic riverside route: New River Drive in Hinton, West Virginia.
As you travel down New River Drive from Hinton, one spot you'll want to note is Brooks Falls, a Class III rapid that stretches across the New River.
Marked by Brooks Falls Roadside Park, this spot features a short trail, a scenic overlook, and several river access points.
Brooks Falls Roadside Park is a good place to stop for a stretch or a snack!
In the warmer months, many even choose to wade on in and swim in this wide, shallow spot on the New.
As you return to the car and continue to make your way down New River Drive, you'll next pass Brooks Island. Seen here from the Brooks Island Overlook on the opposite side of the river from New River Road, this island is known as prime bald eagle habitat.
Continuing on this scenic riverside route, you'll finally reach your ultimate destination and the biggest surprise this scenic trip has to offer: Sandstone Falls.
Sandstone Falls stretches all of 1500 feet across the New River at this spectacular point.
Enjoy it from a boardwalk viewing area or a scenic loop trail between islands formed along the falls.
