West Virginia's New River Gorge is a destination for oversized outdoor adventure. The gorge is one of the most popular climbing destinations on the East Coast, and it's also home to some of the best whitewater rafting in the United States. But you don't need to hang onto a bouncing raft or scale a towering cliff to get a big taste of New River Gorge adventure - the gorge also has hiking trails that offer sweeping views and spectacular scenery. One of the most popular trails is the Endless Wall Trail, a hike that offers a complete New River Gorge experience.
The start of the trail is heavily forested and you'll encounter some small streams. The trail is well marked and easy to follow, with some signs pointing to climbing areas.
The views of the gorge are unforgettable. From the trail, you can see the churning rapids of the New River, far below.
Steep cliffs with dramatic dropoffs provide a dramatic backdrop to the hike.
The Endless Wall Trail is a fairly easy hike. It covers 2.3 miles and takes just over an hour to complete.
Dogs are allowed, but they must be kept on a leash. The trail can get a little muddy, especially on rainy and foggy days.
You'll encounter some spectacular views on the trail that will take your breath away.
There are a couple of ladders near the trail; they were installed by rock climbers in order to more easily reach the trail below.
The New River Gorge is beautiful in any season, but if you can, begin your hike early in the morning as the sunrise above the gorge is incredible. Use caution near the cliffs and be careful not to knock any rocks or gravel off the cliff edges, as there could be climbers below.
