West Virginia Christmas displays fill our state with the magic and wonder of the season. There are so many amazing ones, from Oglebay to Bluefield and many, many spots in between. But nearly all of them are sponsored by a big entity: a resort or city, for example. Not so at Kermit Tyree's Farm in Elkview! This massive (MASSIVE) light display is a one-of-a-kind, privately operated Christmas blaze of color that's sure to delight your whole family, even though you do have to drive out to the middle of nowhere to see it! Here are some pictures (and video footage) to prove that this Christmas display in West Virginia is well worth the trip:
Kermit and JoAnn Tyree are local celebrities in Elkview, West Virginia. Not only do they own Kermit Tyree Construction, a well-respected oil field contractor, but they also put on one of the most spectacular Christmas shows in the state at their family farm on Aaron's Fork Road.
It all started with a single string of lights in 1967...and now it's grown to cover all of 20 acres.
(Can you tell from this picture that the lights just keep going and going? Because they do!)
The couple starts decorating in October to be ready for Thanksgiving weekend, which is when they flip the switch on all these lights.
You can find the Tyree Farm off Exit 9 on Interstate 79 (the Elkview exit) or off Exit 116 on Interstate 77 (the Sissonville exit). They're located halfway between the two interstates, on Aaron's Fork Road, about 7 miles from either exit. You'll know it when you see it, starting with the miles of lighted fence!
Here's one more view from the top, because we just can't get over how much ground these lights cover...
...and then we'll turn you loose with the video footage, just in case these pictures didn't do Kermit Tyree's display justice.
Is this not one of the best Christmas displays in West Virginia? Have you made the trip out to see the Tyree light display before? What favorite Christmas tradition do you look forward to all year long? We have to say that another one of our favorites is picking out a local West Virginia Christmas tree!
