West Virginia is certainly replete with natural beauty, and the best of it is seen in the gorgeous waterfalls throughout this lovely state. One of the most beautiful waterfalls in West Virginia is Elakala Falls near the lovely Pendleton Lake in Blackwater Falls State Park.
Welcome to Wild, Wonderful West Virginia, where we do waterfalls with the best of them. And we actually mean that literally; on a recent list of 30 of America's most breathtaking waterfalls, West Virginia's own Elakala Falls is mentioned.
Elakala Falls, located in Blackwater Falls State Park in Davis, West Virginia, is often overlooked in favor of the park's namesake, the larger Blackwater Falls. But Elakala can hold her own against Blackwater Falls or any other falls in West Virginia.
We chose to focus on Elakala Falls rather than Blackwater Falls because of its unique, staggered, gunmetal-gray steps that form almost a sculpture behind this pretty cascade.
MSN Travel also noted the amber hue of the water as it rushes over Elakala Falls - the water here is dyed this unique color by the tannins from the area's evergreen tree needles.
Beautiful in every season, Elakala Falls is a photographer's paradise and a nature lover's delight.
It's also quite easy to reach. The Elakala Falls Trail begins near Blackwater Falls Lodge, and the hike to the view of this portion of Elakala Falls is under half-a-mile.
