It’s official: The North Cascades Highway is closed for the season. This is the surest sign that winter is rapidly approaching in Washington, and it’s true that our coldest weather is on its way. Whether you love winter or you dread it, you’ve probably had a few of these thoughts at least once.
1. “Oh, no.”
Winter comes every single year. And one of the best things about living in Washington is getting to experience it. Still, every year we act like it’s some kind of terrible surprise.
2. “Do I have snow tires and chains? Do I NEED snow tires and chains?”
This all depends on where you live and how long you’ve had your current snow tires, of course. But even if you live in a place that doesn’t see much snow, you’ll still question yourself. No one likes being stranded.
3. “It’s not going to be that bad…”
Denial.
4. “… this is going to be bad.”
Acceptance.
5. “Maybe I should move to Hawaii.”
You wouldn’t really dream of leaving our beautiful state. Still, sometimes it’s tempting...
6. “Should I take up skiing or snowboarding?”
If you already do this, replace this one with "Yay! It’s skiing and snowboarding season!"
7. “I’m going to get in the best shape shoveling snow.”
More denial, unless you live in Eastern Washington. Even then, you can always pay the neighbor kid to do it for you.
8. “I can’t wait to scrape the ice off my car windows every single morning for three months.”
If you have covered parking, count your blessings.
9. “At least I can hide my holiday weight gain under all my sweaters.”
There’s always an upside to winter.
10. "I hope the pass doesn’t close before I have to drive over it. Or when I’m on it.”
This is a common fear for anyone living in Moses Lake or Spokane who has to fly out of SeaTac or has Seahawks tickets.
11. “Will we have any snow days?”
Those words cause a different internal reaction depending on whether you’re a student, a parent, a teacher or someone who has a long commute to work.
12. “Winter in Washington is absolutely gorgeous.”
At last, acceptance. This usually comes after watching the first real beautiful, soft snowfall.
Our state is beautiful in any season. Enjoy these beautiful photos of Washington transformed by snow.
