This natural monument is located in Steptoe Butte State Park, which is 12 miles north of Colfax. The butte is a quartzite landform that juts out from the rolling hills of Eastern Washington. It is known for the dramatic panoramic views of the surrounding farmland.
From the top of the natural Steptoe Butte monument, the eye can see 200 miles. So this makes for spectacular sunsets.
Native Americans named the butte "power mountain." They believed the mountain's guardian spirit bestowed power on those who journeyed to its top. Today, visitors can drive the scenic, winding six-mile road to the top. (Note that a Discover Pass is required to enter the park.)
Gorgeous panoramic views greet you when you reach the top of the butte. You can see the surrounding farmland, but also the Blue Mountains and other neighboring ranges and peaks.
