Washington State is full of spectacular natural wonders. So many, in fact, that some have become immensely popular attractions for tourists and locals alike. People are drawn to the majestic beauty of Mt. Rainier and the breathtaking views of Snoqualmie Falls. Still, sometimes we find ourselves in need of a quiet getaway where we can escape from the ordinary. We long to take in the beauty of nature, free from crowds. Such a place exists in the White Bluffs Central Slope area of Hanford Reach National Monument, where you'll find an unexpected natural wonder right here in Washington - sand dunes!
Moderately challenging, the 6-mile out-and-back hike will take you through diverse topography offering spectacular views.
Enter the Wahluke Unit of Hanford National Monument just past milepost 63 on State Route 24. Once inside the gated entrance, follow the road 8 miles to the free parking lot. Signs guide visitors to the White Bluffs Overlook where the trail commences.
As with all nature hikes, preparation is key.
Although this hike is beautiful year-round, you'll want to be sure you're prepared for the weather. It can get quite warm in the spring and summer, so an ample water supply is a must along with a high-quality sun hat. Don't forget the sunscreen.
Trails are unmarked and signage is minimal, but the area is well-trodden and easily navigable.
After a mile of exploring arid terrain and grassy landscapes, the trail opens up to a most unexpected site; shimmering sand as far as the eye can see.
Follow the golden plains and gentle slopes for another two miles of peaceful tranquility.
Photo opportunities abound on the ever-changing wind-blown dunes. Nevertheless, due to potential high winds, do take proper precautions to protect camera equipment.
Getting away from it all never looked so good.
White Bluffs Central Slope is a quiet respite where you'll likely run into very few people. The trail typically takes around three hours to complete, but we recommend allowing extra time to stop and enjoy the views.
