With 124 state parks in Washington, you can bet there’s always an epic outdoor adventure waiting for you. While more popular state parks in Washington like Deception Pass State Park and Cape Disappointment State Park are certainly worth seeing at least once in your life, there are plenty of underrated state parks in the Evergreen State that are worth your while, like Rockport State Park. Come with me on this adventure to explore this hidden gem in Washington. Also, you’ll want to bring your camera to take some Rockport State Park photos for your collection.
Rockport State Park is a 632-acre enchanting oasis at the foot of Sauk Mountain in Skagit County.
It's unlike any other state park in Washington, that's for sure.
The biggest attraction to this park is the old-growth forest, which takes up nearly 600 acres of the park.
The area was never logged, and now we get the opportunity to experience an old-growth forest and the ecosystems that sustain it. Many of these trees are hundreds of years old (and hundreds of feet tall).
There are several hiking trails that weave throughout this sea of enchanting emeralds.
The Evergreen Trail begins at the parking lot and is moderately easy. The three-mile trail does have a bit of an incline, especially towards the top, but generally speaking, it’s a moderately-difficult trail.
As you wander through this enchanted forest, take note of these marvelous giants--some of them are more than 250 feet tall!
These evergreens tend to create a canopy so thick that sunlight doesn't reach the ground. Catching a beam of sunlight making its way through the canopy will stop you in your tracks.
Camping was once allowed, however due to the risk of falling trees and widow makers, no overnight camping is allowed.
We're mentioning this because it's a fairly recent change, so we wouldn't want to you come with all your gear and be disappointed!
Along your hike, you'll pass over several little brooks and streams which add a nice soundtrack to your hike.
Between the 250-tall trees and the 5,537-foot Sauk Mountain, you'll feel very small hiking through these earthly giants.
This photo is from the appropriately named Skagit View Trail. What a view!
There are a few benches peppered along the trails, too. Sit for a spell and take in the views and admire this unique forest.
This hidden gem may soon become your favorite state park in Washington!
