If you really want to explore Washington's natural beauty, get out on its hiking trails and immerse yourself in it! You don't need to be an experienced hiker to get out there; here's an easy-peasy nature trail that takes you to a gorgeous waterfall, and it's perfect for just about everyone.
Olympia National Park is one of Washington's most beautiful spots, and the Sol Duc Falls Nature Trail is a great way to explore it.
You'll find the parking lot for the trailhead about two miles past the Sol Duc Hot Springs and Resort. The quaint sign has some obvious misspellings.
The trail is just 1.6 miles long, out and back, and it's easy enough for most hikers to tackle. Lace up your hiking boots, grab your camera and hit the trail!
Visitors report that this old-growth forest is similar to the Hoh Rainforest, but with the added benefit of a beautiful waterfall. It's definitely a picturesque place.
The fern-lined trail meanders through lush forest, providing plenty of shade on a hot day.
Cross a little bridge...
...and you'll soon come to a historic shelter. The shelter was built in 1939 by the Civilian Conservation Corps.
Continue on the path until you reach the overlook to the falls. Unlike many waterfalls that tumble from high above your head, you'll be situated looking down into the falls for a unique perspective.
The water tumbles about 50 feet from the Sol Duc River into a gorge below. You might see three or four separate cascades, depending on the time of year you visit.
Allow yourself about an hour to explore this trail and take photos of the falls. The overlook area has benches where you can sit and enjoy the scenery before heading back down the trail to your car.
As always, please practice Leave No Trace Principles when exploring Washington's beautiful outdoor spaces so the folks visiting after you will enjoy the same experience.
