Do your hiking tastes run hipster? If you like to be at the cutting edge of all things outdoor recreation, check out the newest hike in Washington at Larrabee State Park. Located near the vibrant college community of Bellingham, Larrabee has built a reputation for providing some of the best water views in the Northwest. Get lost on its 18 miles of trail, and immerse yourself in the Salish Sea's dynamic coastal beauty.
Established in 1915, Larrabee is actually Washington's oldest state park. It's easy to see why officials felt inclined to protect this stunning swathe of land. Today, it comprises almost three thousand acres and over 8,000 feet of Samish Bay shoreline. Visitors can stay the night at one of its numerous campsites or trek in for a day of adventure.
On August 1, 2023, Washington State opened a new one-mile trail in Larrabee. This path gives hikers access to a secluded beach once blocked by a dangerous railroad crossing. By using a suspended pedestrian bridge that's been in the works for almost 15 years, Larrabee visitors can now safely explore this stunning slice of shore.
Given its bite-sized length, reaching Clayton Beach is a totally manageable and family-friendly day trek. Explore tidal zones as they're exposed by the receding tide and stick around to watch the waves move in again. Larrabee is a favorite for all sorts of outdoor fun including shellfish harvesting and boating.
But Clayton Beach's postcard views also make it a superb location to do nothing at all. The variability of coastal environments means patient hikers can always notice something they haven't seen before.
It will be great news to dog lovers like myself that Larrabee welcomes well-mannered pooches. So long as they remain leashed and their owners commit to all necessary clean-up, Fido can enjoy the sand between his toes alongside you.
Whether you're going alone or arriving with family (furry and otherwise), you're bound to find a walk to Clayton Beach worthwhile. In a state brimming with natural beauty, it's a treat to discover a new perspective on the landscapes we love.
Pack your bags and prepare for your best one-day adventure in years at Larrabee State Park! This newest hike in Washington will surprise you with its ratio between stunning views and sweat.
