One of the best ways to understand any place is by getting outside and exploring it. Lucky for us, Washington offers some of the best ways to have an adventure. And our favorite adventures are the ones that don't require a ton of sweat equity. That's why we love this trail. It allows for those quintessential PNW views, but won't take all day. The route is simple and the waterfall payoff is one of the best we've seen!
For this special little hike you'll want to head to Olympic State Park where there are so many trails you're head might spin. But, keep your eyes on the prize and focus on the 1.7-mile Marymere Falls Trail.
The out-and-back route features lush greenery and lots of wonderful forest views. You'll start just off the parking lot, where the trail is relatively flat and simple to follow.
The old-growth forest offers lots of shade and the trail itself is well-maintained.
There are portions that feel a bit skinny, but you'll find the visitors are respectful of space. And if you visit early enough there's a good chance you'll have a bit more privacy. Show up later in the day, though, and you'll be contending with lots of others. This is especially true during the summer.
Another fun feature is the nearby lake and the streams you'll pass. Always be careful around these areas as things might be slippery.
Kids love the log bridge that runs over one of the streams, so be sure to add some extra time for this feature!
As you get closer there are some fairly steep stairs leading to the falls. This is best for people who are strong on their feet.
And then you'll see it! The waterfall is about 90-feet and creates a beautiful cascade into the water below.
Once you've enjoyed the view, turn around and head back the same way you came. And if you have some extra time be sure to explore some of the other trails.
There's a ton to see here. And each of the vantage points throughout the park will feel different depending on the trail, the day and the season!
Marymere Falls Trail can be found within Olympic National Park. While rules and regulations related to visiting the park have changed, much of it is now open for visiting. Be sure to check out the official National Park website for information before visiting. And to learn more about the trail itself visit alltrails.com where you'll find reviews and a map.
