Much like summer, fall tends to fly by here in Washington. And some of our most beautiful hiking trails aren't easy to reach for most Washingtonians. If you only have time for a single hike this season, you may as well make it a scenic trail with plenty of amazing fall foliage.
The Maple Pass Loop is located on the North Cascades Scenic Highway.
Getting to the trailhead is easy (just follow Highway 20 to mile marker 158), and there's usually plenty of parking available.
This 7-mile trail is ranked as one of the best in the state.
It's definitely one of the most scenic parts of the North Cascades, and that's saying a lot.
The path takes you past old growth forests, alpine meadows, a peaceful lake...
... and it's especially incredible in the autumn.
Every fall, the larches turn a beautiful shade of gold, which complements all the other autumn hues.
Taking in these sights while breathing the crisp mountain air is amazing.

If you're hoping to hike this gorgeous trail this fall, do it soon -- the North Cascades Highway closes seasonally, typically in mid-late November.
There's still plenty of time to make this beautiful experience a priority.
Since this is a loop, you'll have two potential routes.
If you go clockwise, you'll tackle the steepest part of the journey right away. If you go counterclockwise, you'll have a more gradual climb.
