Lush forests open up to glorious waterfalls and wildflower-speckled meadows. With so much to see and do, you could easily fill up your calendar with local adventures. If your happy place is the beach, Washington has plenty to choose from, and we found a beautiful waterfront respite with an incredible natural wonder you may not even know exists.
Welcome to Spencer Spit State Park, a marine park on Lopez Island in the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
Named for its unique twin sandspit enclosing a salt chuck lagoon, Spencer Spit is a hidden gem of natural beauty.
Unique to other sand spits in Washington, Spencer Spit is made up of two separate sandpits completely encompassing a saltwater lagoon.
Formed by the constant motion of wind and tide, the spit is ever-changing and could one day become completely covered by sand.
Spencer Spit State Park is known for its excellent crabbing and fishing and is one of the few parks in the San Juan Islands accessible by automobile.
This nearly 200-acre marine park offers 37 tent spaces for camping and two public restrooms.
Experience tranquility on the water where you might catch a glimpse of the area's native birds and sea creatures including bald eagles, herons, salmon, and otters.
Take a family-friendly one-mile hike on the Spencer Spit Trail loop where dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash.
Enjoy peaceful serenity as you take in spectacular sunsets over Spencer Spit.
If you're looking for a quiet getaway free from large crowds and full of splendor and one of the state's most unique natural wonders, head to Spencer Spit on Lopez Island and surround yourself with the natural beauty hidden in this incredible park.
