In a state as rich in natural beauty as ours, it's difficult to say that one hike is more photogenic than any other. But Gothic Basin comes pretty close. This North Cascades jaw-dropper will get your heart racing. Though it's one of the most stunning hikes in Washington, it's also a grueling route winding uphill for over nine miles.
Nestled in the Morning Star Natural Resources Conservation Area, Gothic Basin is a Pacific Northwest treasure harboring a beautiful— and fragile— ecosystem. This otherworldly spot is home to dozens of endangered plant and animal species. Experienced hikers will be familiar with the outdoorsmen's creed of "leaving no trace." The principle has never rung truer than when visiting places like Gothic Basin, where the public's continued access hinges on their willingness to respect the nature around them.
Hikers might think that the route's low elevation gain means an easy jaunt, but they're mistaken. Miners were the first to establish the path leading to Gothic Basin. Today's adventurers will find that these original trailblazers had little patience for switchbacks, which commonly ease the burn of a steep climb.
Your way is straight up and will involve a scramble or two, especially if the trail retains snow. But you'll have plenty of beauty to distract you from the effort. A crossing at Weeden Creek, for instance, boasts picturesque waterfall views.
You'll know when your trek is complete once you reach Gothic Basin's most iconic feature, Gothic Lake. Its stunning waters are the beating heart of a thriving animal and plant community.
On the surrounding slopes, listen to the calls of alpine marmots, and, in warmer months, watch out for the range of rare flowers populating the rocky ground.
With its jutting mountains and magnetic panoramas, the basin will tempt you to wander aimlessly from one vista to the next. However enticing, remember your impact on this serene habitat and stick to paths or rocky ground. If you've got the gumption and the equipment, I highly recommend bringing your backpacking gear and staying for the night. My morning in Gothic Basin was revelatory and an experience I'll keep with me forever.
Are you looking for one of the most stunning hikes in Washington? Check out Gothic Basin. Though the way there is difficult, visitors are rewarded with an afternoon— or even a night— in one of our state's most achingly beautiful spots.
