There are over 60 mountain ranges in Washington, and we might be biased, but we think they're all magnificent. The Olympic Peninsula is particularly mountainous, and there's no better way to take enjoy them than by taking in the views from an exhilarating hiking trail. For a nice, pleasant, family-friendly hike on the peninsula, just head straight to Hurricane Hill.
The Hurricane Hill Trail is a 3.2-mile trail you'll find on the Northern coast of the Olympic Peninsula.
While the trail doesn't close except in the case of severe weather, it's most commonly used between May and October.
The trailhead is located near Port Angeles, not far from the Olympic National Park Visitors Center and Wilderness Information Center.
From the Visitors Center, you'll ontinue up the Hurricane Ridge Road for 18 miles to the Hurricane Ridge Visitors Center. The parking area will be about a mile and a half beyond that, and you'll see the mountain views almost instantly.
This out-and-back trail is ranked as moderate due to a few switchbacks and steep climbs, but it's considered a great hike for beginners and is family-friendly.
If you've never been to the park or need a fairly easy first hike of the season, this is the trail for you.
The wide pathway takes you along a south-facing traverse, first through open forests, and then through a few switchbacks.
Then, you'll trek through golden grasses to the stunning Hurricane Hill summit.
Depending on the time of year, you might see wildlife, wildflowers, or a light dusting of snow.
We recommend hiking this trail multiple times, in more than one season, to experience the diversity.
Prepare for breathtaking views of the Bailey Range, which is located between the Pacific Ocean and Mount Olympus.
If you look north, you'll see the city of Port Angeles and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. On a clear day, you might even see Vancouver Island from across the water.
This beautiful hike is simply full of breathtaking views.
If you're planning on exploring the peninsula this year, add Hurricane Hill to your must-see list.
