Washington's hiking trails are second to none -- and that means the majority of them are pretty popular. But if you choose a trail that's a little off the beaten path, you'll have a better chance of enjoying some seclusion. And if you hike the Heather Lake Trail, you just might enjoy some private lakeside lounging.
The Heather Lake Trail is located in Mount Pilchuck State Park in the North Cascades.
To reach it, head down the Mountain Loop Highway from Granite Falls and turn right on Pilchuck Road, where you'll see signs for the parking lot.
This trail is near the Mount Pilchuck Trail, which seems to be a more popular hike.
However, this path is definitely just as picturesque.
After climbing through the woods for a couple of miles before you reach the lake.
And you'll definitely want to get as close as possible.
Heather Lake is absolutely beautiful.
The trail is only about 5 miles in length, so it does get crowded on weekends in the summer. But if you go on a weekday or in the off season, you just might have it to yourself.
You're welcome to stay and fish at the lake, whether from shore or on a flotation device.
Most fish will be small, so it would mainly be a catch-and-release kind of day.
This hike is most popular when the weather is warm, but don't be afraid to attempt the trail in the late fall or in the early spring when there's still some snow on the ground.
The 5-mile trek will keep you nice and cozy.
To enjoy total privacy, hike the trail on a weekday, and start early in the morning.
By the time you reach the lake, you can enjoy a nice thermos of coffee and breakfast in peace.
Sometimes a long hike is just what we need for some peace and quiet. If you tend to avoid crowds whenever possible, here's a list of places in Washington to check out.
