Washington is home to several incredibly beautiful beaches, some of which lie tucked away in unlikely destinations. If you've heard of Fort Worden State Park, you've likely heard of its history as a United States Army base. And while the history is fascinating, these days it's mainly the peaceful beach and its brilliant blue waters that keep people coming back.
Fort Worden State Park is located in Port Townsend, otherwise known as Washington's Victorian seaport.
It was constructed between 1898 and 1920, and it has been a National Historic Landmark since 1976.
Back in the late 1800s, Admiralty Inlet was considered strategic to the defense of Puget Sound.
Fort Worden was constructed as part of a "triangle of fire" (three forts) to thwart any invasion attempt by sea.
Fort Worden was an active United States Army base from 1902 to 1953.
In 1957, it was purchased by the state of Washington, reaching state park status in 1973.
And while touring the old soldiers' quarters and Commanding Officer's House is fascinating, these days, most come to admire the beauty of the waterfront location.
This park is loved by military and maritime history buffs alike.
The park features over two miles of pristine saltwater shoreline.
Tourists and locals alike love to spend their days here.
You're also welcome to camp at Fort Worden if you'd like to maximize your beach time.
There are two campgrounds with 80 campsites, some of which are right on the beach.
If you've never been to Fort Worden State Park, add it to your Pacific Northwest Bucket List at once.
This place (and its beautiful beaches) will steal your heart.
