Are you looking for an outdoor adventure in Washington this summer? Head to my favorite of the San Juan Islands, bucolic Lopez, and climb into the canopies of an old-growth forest! Hosted by veteran climber Leo through the company Adventure Terra, this unforgettable outing allows even inexperienced climbers to see the Evergreen State from a whole new perspective.
Nothing inaugurates a great in-state trip for me like a ferry ride. From Anacortes, your trip to the Lopez Island terminal will last just under an hour, but that's enough time to feel your cares stream away. While wintery rides along this route promise moody atmosphere and austere vistas, summer travel boasts dazzling blue waters and occasional whale sightings!
Besides being covered in some of our state's most beautiful farmland, Lopez Island contains some gorgeous old-growth forests. This is where your adventure will take place!
Tree climbing shares some fundamentals with rock climbing, so if you've got experience in the gym or outdoors, you'll likely have a foot-up learning the ropes. That said, your guide, Leo, has experience assisting people of all levels. There are even battery-powered ascenders to make the process easier.
Your outing may take you as high as 200 feet into the canopy. While Adventure Terra tailors the excursion to your needs, know that heights like these can be mentally and physically taxing for some. To help prepare you, you'll receive safety instructions and on-the-ground experience with the equipment.
I've written before about Washington's stunning views. Often, they're your reward for enduring a grueling alpine hike. This unique experience will give you a completely different view that's equally— if not more— exclusive. Very few people have ever seen the San Juans from the canopy of an old-growth forest!
Bring athletic clothing, some comfortable shoes, water, and snacks. Oh, and don't forget your sense of adventure!
Whether you climb 100 feet or 200, you'll walk away from this incredible outing with a sense of accomplishment and memories to last a lifetime.
