With such incredible landscapes, charming towns, and beautiful scenes to explore, one might argue that Virginia as a state is heaven on earth. And if you'd really like to experience its otherworldly beauty, you'll want to visit Westmoreland State Park in Montross. As is the case with all of Virginia's State Parks, Westmoreland State Park is a beautifully preserved stretch of land with plenty of activities to offer. Whether you're in the mood for a sunset stroll, a hike through the woods, or a cozy evening in a cabin, you'll find this spot nothing short of heavenly.
Located in Montross along the northern neck of the Potomac River, Westmoreland State Park is one of the most picturesque areas in Virginia. Along with these beautiful landscapes come unique and memorable activities, too.
Westmoreland State Park has amenities that would please just about anyone. In the summer, that means kayaking along the river and setting up camp in one of the beautiful camp sites. During the colder months, visitors can rent one of the scenic cabins and cozy up for a long weekend.
These cabins have a functioning kitchen, living room, and wood-burning fireplace; however, they are also fairly rustic and don’t have televisions. It’s the perfect opportunity to get away from it all and indulge in the beautiful scenery. Anyone traveling in a group up to 16 can check out the Potomac River Retreat, a beautiful facility with five bedrooms and a deck overlooking the water.
There are a total of 7 trails that span Westmoreland State Park, each fairly short in length and offering a beautiful insight into the area’s wildlife. It’s not unusual to spot a friendly deer or two along these peaceful strolls. The park also has a beach trial, offering great views of the water any time of year.
Another incredible aspect of Westmoreland State Park is the opportunity to hunt for ancient shark teeth along the Potomac shoreline. It’s not rare to see fossil collectors enthusiastically looking for these tokens along the pristine beaches.
It's hard to pinpoint exactly what makes Westmoreland feel like heaven on earth, but there's no denying that the water has something to do with it. Anytime of day, the vast river shines with spectacular color and makes for one of the most unforgettable sunsets.
