In the past, we've covered just about every corner of the state when it comes to amazing natural sites. Even still, we are continuously surprised by the sheer amount of beauty Virginia has to offer. To those who live outside of the area, this oasis just outside of Roanoke is relatively unknown. Even during colder months, the picture perfect scenery of Carvins Cove makes for an unforgettable trip.
Carvins Cove is located outside of Roanoke, just a few minutes from I-81. Encompassing nearly 12,500 acres, it’s the second-largest municipally managed park in the country.
Yet despite its vast size, this area remains something of a hidden gem.
Photographed above is the view from nearby Tinker Mountain.
For those seeing Carvins Cove for the very first time, they might think they’ve stumbled upon a tropical oasis.
The smooth, clear blue water in contrast with the vast mountains in the background looks like something from a painting.
The Cove was created in the 1930s, when Carvins Creek was damned to create a reservoir. For several years, this body of water served as the water source for Roanoke.
Over 6,000 acres of the beautiful natural area are protected under a conservation easement. Provided by the Virginia Outdoors Foundation and the Western Virginia Land Trust, this easement is the largest in the entire state.
