Parks in Virginia are in no short supply. We have world-class national parks, breathtaking state parks, and positively phenomenal regional and local parks -- each with its own assortment of amenities. Whether you're looking for amazing playgrounds, breathtaking mountain overlooks, tennis courts, or another unique amenity, you're bound to find it in a nearby park. Today's feature destination is one such place with an added bonus: the option to observe wildlife. Maymont Park is known for many things, including beautiful gardens and a historic home. Yet it's also where you and your little ones can observe some pretty special creatures, including black bears, elk, and more. Curious to learn more? Let's take a little trip!
Welcome to Maymont! A 100-acre historic estate, this beautiful park is one that every Virginian should experience at least once.
Boasting some of the state's most beautiful gardens, as well as an arboretum, the park is most popular in the spring in summer. However, it really is a year-round destination, offering all kinds of seasonal attractions.
And, if you're a nature and wildlife enthusiast, it's hard to imagine a better place to visit.
The park offers three unique spaces for observing animals: the Robins Nature Center, the Maymont Farm, and the wildlife habitats.
The Robins Nature Center is a tribute to the unique ecology of the James River. In fact, the river itself borders Maymont!
Maymont Farm is where you can enjoy hands-on encounters with friendly farm animals. As you can imagine, this exhibit is especially popular with little ones!
Lastly, the wildlife habitats are some of the most unique ways to observe Virginia's wildlife. As you explore the 40-acre space, you'll find exhibits featuring animals unique to Virginia, many of which are rescues.
Some of the animals include black bears, elk, red foxes, bald eagles, owls, and more. Your chance of spotting these animals is higher if you can get to the park early!
