Great Falls Park is one of Virginia's many natural wonders. Rushing falls, cascades, and powerful rapids characterize this massive park shared between Virginia and Maryland along the mighty Potomac River. It's a destination that belongs on everyone's radar, especially those with an interest in wildlife. Yet it can be daunting to pinpoint the best trail for experiencing the most beautiful scenery at Great Falls. Fortunately, we've discovered a short-and-sweet loop that offers the perfect overview. Whether it's your launching point for a longer trail or the only hike you take in the park, you'll find it to be a rewarding experience.
If you're looking for an excellent introductory experience at Great Falls Park, the River Trail Mini Loop is the way to go.
This 1.6-mile loop, though it features some stairs and a couple of rock scrambles, is by and large considered to be relatively easy.
Along the way, hikers can look forward to breathtaking views of the Potomac River. You'll also have a chance to explore the remnants of the Potowmack Canal, which was originally built by George Washington.
During this short-and-sweet loop, you'll discover three distinctive overviews, all of which offer sweeping views of the water.
If you're lucky, you might even spot some activity down below! As you'll see in this photo, it's common for kayakers to test their skills on the famous rapids.
Some stretches of the trail meander through the woods, an equally beautiful and peaceful setting for your stroll.
To check out the route of this beloved trail, be sure to visit AllTrails for the helpful step-by-step overview and map. This particular trail is not wheelchair or stroller accessible, but you can find overlooks in the park that are. Read all about them here.
