Located within the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests awaits a remote yet amazing hiking destination: Three Ridges Wilderness.
You may have heard of the Three Ridges Wilderness before; it's a notoriously challenging portion of the Appalachian Trail.
Today's feature hike, Hanging Rock, is part of that portion of the A.T.
To begin the journey, you can park at Reeds Gap, where the Appalachian Trail intersects Beech Grove Road near the Blue Ridge Parkway.
From there, you'll hike upwards for about 3.5 miles. It's a challenging trek uphill to be sure. But when you see the views, you'll agree that the efforts were all worthwhile!
Even in the wintertime, the clarity is breathtaking.
Given that the return hike is mostly downhill, you'll want to be sure to wear sturdy hiking boots and possibly bring a hiking stick for extra support during the rocky sections.
Hikers who have taken this trail recently confirm that it's in great shape and well-marked. So, if you're up for a bit of a challenge with an incredible reward at the end, this might just be your trail!
