Old Rag isn't exactly what you'd call a hidden gem. In fact, this trail is the most popular in all of Shenandoah National Park. Yet that doesn't mean that it's suitable for everyone, especially considering the fact that the trail measures 9 miles in length and gains some serious elevation. Experienced hikers will want to check this trek off their bucket list, and those who aren't up for an all-day excursion will enjoy the photos of this iconic Virginia attraction.
Old Rag Trail is an iconic Virginia hike that can be accessed via Shenandoah National Park.
With its infamous rock scrambles and sweeping mountain views, the Old Rag experience is one that holds a spot on every outdoor enthusiast's bucket list.
However, unlike some trails in Shenandoah National Park, this 9-mile loop is anything but easy.
Due to rock scrambles and a seemingly endless upwards climb, the trail takes at least 7 hours to complete.
Fortunately, there are plenty of gorgeous draws to this trek, such as stream crossings, densely wooded forests, and even a few false peaks which add allure to the hike.
Hikers will quickly learn that there is no shortage of boulders, ranging from small to massive, along this trail.
You'll know you've reached the top when you come across the brown elevation sign.
At an elevation of 3,284 feet, you'll feel as though you're standing on top of the world. Though this isn't the tallest point in the park, the views are simply spectacular.
At the top, enjoy the 360-degree views along with a picnic lunch and rest up before the descent. You'll have earned it!
