If you're familiar with the trails of Shenandoah National Park, you've likely heard of Old Rag Mountain. It's perhaps the most famous of Virginia's trails, with sweeping views of the surrounding landscape. In fact, it's consistently rated as one of the most beautiful natural attractions in Virginia. However, this beauty comes at a price. Not only is Old Rag Mountain Loop one of the most difficult treks in the state, but it's also quite possibly the most dangerous hike in Virginia. Layers upon layers of the Blue Ridge Mountains stretch for as far as the eye can see, and it's no wonder this hike is at the top of every outdoor enthusiast's bucket list.
The top of this crumbly peak is distinct and actually the reason behind its nickname.
"Old Rag Granite" is a kind of crystalized magma that's very durable and lives beneath the surface. Experts believe this granite was created 900 million years ago!
Spring is one of the most popular times to hike Old Rag Mountain Loop, which can boast as many as 850 flowering plants.
During the winter and late fall, the trail is sometimes closed due to icy conditions. It's always important to check ahead of time for trail closures.
Despite being one of the park's most popular trails, Old Rag Loop is also intense on every level. Clocking in at 9.4 miles, the hike is an all-day adventure.

In fact, Shenandoah National Park asserts that this is by far the most dangerous hike you can take in the park.
What makes the hike so dangerous is its length and intensity. Switchbacks and rocky trails make the climb extremely challenging, and long stretches of boulders mean you'll have to watch your footing at every step.
Each year, the park has to rescue hikers who have become exhausted, dehydrated, or injured.
Plus, due to the length of the trail, rescues can take several hours.
That being said, if you're up for the challenge and are physically prepared, the hike will be well worth your effort.
