Big Branch Falls is less than 5 miles round trip and is relatively easy. Hikers and nature enthusiasts alike will want to add this dreamy waterfall hike to their adventure bucket list.
Let's take a look:
Not far from Charlottesville, this family-friendly trail is appropriate for hikers of different skill levels.
To access the trailhead, follow Sugar Hollow Road (also known as Route 614) past the reservoir. The parking area is located on a former fire road.
The gorgeous trail meanders along the Moorman River and is also known as the North Folk Moorman Trail.
About one mile into the hike, you'll encounter a few river crossings. If you don't mind getting your feet wet, these crossings can be wonderfully refreshing.
Depending on the time of year, these crossings can range from ankle deep to knee deep, so be sure to wear appropriate shoes.
Eventually, you'll reach Big Branch Spur, which you'll take for approximately 1/10th of a mile before reaching the falls.
This gentle cascade is picturesque and, during warmer days, trickles into a beautiful swimming hole.
Even in the heart of winter, the scenery along this trail is remarkable.
If you'd like to avoid the stream crossings on your return trip, you can opt for the small path that leads up the cliffs on the east side of the river. This route also lends itself to gorgeous views of the landscape.
