Tucked away in Mt. Solon in Augusta County, Virginia await one of the state's most striking natural wonders: the Natural Chimneys. These limestone rock formations, which resemble chimneys, were actually formed during the Paleozoic Era when the region was completely underwater. Today, visitors can admire these fascinating and ancient rock formations along the North River. And the best news of all? This attraction is completely free of charge. The Stunning Top-Secret Natural Spring in Virginia That Almost No One Has Heard Of

Fredericksburg's Alum Spring could be considered the oldest park in the country, and its waters are believed to have a healing property.

Our state is abundant in natural springs, perhaps the most famous of which are found near the Omni Homestead Resort in the aptly named Warm Springs, Virginia. Yet there are plenty of other springs, some thermal and some not, that have been enjoyed for centuries. Alum Spring is one such example. It's located in Fredericksburg, tucked away within a peaceful park that might just be the region's best-kept secret.

Alum Spring Park is a 34-acre treasure trove of woods, streams, and walking paths. Robert A. Hodge is often credited with the creation of the park. Hodge once described the natural area as "the most historic park in America’s most historic city." In his book, A History of Alum Spring Park, Hodge describes the park's fascinating geography and expansive history.

Visitors today agree that the park is a breath of fresh air; it's secluded, naturally beautiful, and the perfect escape from the city.

The park's main attraction is, of course, the namesake Alum Spring that remains 72 degrees year-round. As the spring evaporates, crystalized salt forms on the surface, inspiring the name "alum." In 1895, a local by the name of John H. Buis wanted to turn the spring into a health resort, though he was unsuccessful.

Fortuantely, the beautiful, peaceful spring water can still be enjoyed today. One of the best ways to experience the park is via the Alum Spring Park Loop, an easy one-mile loop trail that will take you on a storybook-like trail through the landscape.

As you explore the trail, you'll feel immersed in the park's peaceful, serene setting. It's such a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the city that you might decide to stay longer than you originally planned! The park offers picnic areas and charcoal grills for anyone looking to enjoy a cookout or picnic.

From the trail, you'll also get an up-close view of the park's other geological wonder: ancient sandstone cliffs that are about 100 million years old.

During the summer, visitors enjoy wading into the spring, enjoying its refreshing temperature. It's hard not to be tempted to take a dip in that crystal-clear water!

Other park amenities include a pavilion that's available to rent as well as a small playground. It really is a natural space that all ages will cherish.

Then, you'll grab a burger at Spelunker's -- the perfect stop for any hungry underground adventurer on an epic cave-themed day trip in Virginia!

Welcome to Skyline Caverns! Tucked away in Warren County, this lesser-known natural attraction is a great place to start your day trip. As far as caves in Virginia go this one is one of the best with interesting rock formations and dynamic lighting.
