Virginia's hikes are as beautiful as they are unique. With so much terrain variety, it's true that no two hikes are alike. And even with so many to choose from, it seems as though Shenandoah National Park is home to the most-hiked trails in the entire state. The Park's Old Rag Mountain Trail is largely considered to be the most exquisite in all of Virginia, and with such incredible views, it's hard to argue otherwise. Here's some more information on this beloved hike.
Ask any Virginia trail enthusiast and he or she will most likely recommend Shenandoah National Park’s Old Rag Trail as an absolute must-do. It's iconic, versatile, and definitely rewarding. And at 9 miles and nearly 2,5000 feet of elevation, it’s also no easy trek. Fortunately, there are plenty of switchbacks which make the climb much more manageable.
This highly-trafficked loop is located right outside of Syria. Hikers begin with a one-mile segment towards the original Old Rag parking area. At this point, you’ll want to turn left and embark on a gentle climb.
After a series of switchbacks, prepare for some scrambling. Granite boulder rocks provide somewhat of a challenge, but can easily be navigated. If ever you lose track of the trail, just keep your eyes peeled for the blue blazes.
One of the characteristic features of the Old Rag hike is the number of false peaks. This can be somewhat frustrating, but ultimately rewarding as each becomes increasingly magnificent, saving the best for last. You’ll recognize the true summit with its brown elevation marker. Take your time and enjoy the views — this is one of the best picnic spots around.
The descent is considerably easier, and you’ll want to follow signs for Saddle Trail. After passing the Old Rag Shelter, you’ll come to a crossroads and want to stick to the right. This will lead towards the Weakley Hollow Fire Road, which lasts a lengthy four miles back to the parking lot.
Despite its length and difficulty, Old Rag is an incredibly popular trail and one worth all the effort. Most hikers can tackle the trail in 4 hours. On weekends you can be sure of some crowds, although there is plenty of room at the top. Be sure to pack plenty of water and some snacks and most of all, enjoy the views!
The trail parking lot is located at Nethers Rd, Etlan, VA 22719. Have you conquered Old Rag? Be sure to share your stories! For anyone looking for some shorter trails, be sure to check out these 12 Incredible Hikes Under 5 Miles In Virginia.
