One of the most stunning state parks in Virginia, False Cape State Park is one that belongs on every Virginian's radar.
To start, it's the southernmost state park in Virginia. Additionally, the landscape is steeped in both Native American and colonial history.
If it's your first time visiting, you'll be drawn to the variety in landscapes: Live Oak trees covered in Spanish moss, sand dunes, marshes, and salty air all create a truly unique ecosystem.
To make the most of your experience, we recommend taking the Marsh Ridge Trail. This 1.4-mile hike will provide the perfect overview of all there is to see in the park.
One of the best parts about the park is that there's an entire network of trails that will let you hike between the Atlantic Ocean and Sand Bay.
After a long day of exploring the park, there are few things more exhilarating than a dip in the ocean! Hikers should also keep in mind that some parts of the trail may be temporarily closed for wildlife preservation. The east/west trails are typically closed between November and March 1st for bird migration.
Plus, there's ample opportunity to spot some majestic wildlife. The marshy landscape is the perfect habitat for the likes of heron, otters, turtles, and even bald eagles.
Between the beautiful views and the fascinating history, it's no mystery why False Cape State Park is such a treasured part of Virginia's state park system.
