For a fascinating and important perspective of the Native Tribes of Virginia, you can visit one of Virginia's newest state parks: Machicomo State Park. Established along the banks of the York River, this 645-acre park is as beautiful as it is informative. The park has been designed in collaboration with tribal representatives to celebrate the Powhatan presence deeply embedded in the landscape.
Located on the banks of the beautiful York River, approximately 10 miles downriver of Werowocomoco, you'll find the beautiful Machicomo State Park.
Werowocomoco was the village and headquarters of Chief Powhatan, an important Algonquian leader.
When you first arrive, be sure to visit the open-air pavilion that serves as a guide to the interpretive park and surrounding landscape.
Inside, there is a detailed account of the landscape, culture, and movement of Virginia's Native American tribes.
Additionally, you'll find pathways with markings that reference the ecology of the landscape using the Algonquian language and cultural signifiers.
As you explore the park and all of its fascinating cultural features, you'll find a renewed appreciation and reverence for the landscape and tribes that made their home here.
Additionally, the park offers recreational opportunities for hiking, biking, kayaking, and camping.
Despite being a relatively small park, you'll find that Machicomo State Park is positively brimming with historic insight and breathtaking natural scenery.
