Residents of Virginia have plenty to be proud of, and at the top of the list is our incredible state parks.
These protected areas provide a scenic haven for residents and visitors alike to admire the beautiful, diverse landscapes of Virginia. While many are aware of these state parks, few realize just how many there are. Among these 38 designated state parks, some are more hidden away than others. One such case is the beautiful Caledon State Park. Tucked away in King George, this natural area might just be one of the state's best kept secrets.
Welcome to Caledon State Park, a breathtaking natural area located along the Potomac River in King George, Virginia.
The park provides over 2,500 acres of land complete with boardwalks, coastline, forested areas, and wetlands.
The land was originally owned by the founders of the town of Alexandria, who established the Caledon Plantation in 1659. By 1974, the ownership was passed to the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Perhaps the most noteworthy aspect of the park is its proximity to the river. It’s here visitors can enjoy a dramatic sunset or even partake in water activities.
Hiking trails provide an opportunity to explore the nearby forests, filled with oak-tulip poplars.
Walk through these woody pathways and you’ll enter a world of enchantment, secluded under these towering trees.
Even an off-season visit will provide plenty of activities to get into. As you’ll see in the below photographs, Caledon turns into something of a winter wonderland under the snow.
With its population of American bald eagles and other wildlife, Caledon has been attracting bird watchers for decades.
The park makes for an excellent camping spot. While there are no cabins, there are several campsites available by means of kayaking or hiking.
Whether you stay for a night of camping or stop by for a brief visit, you’ll enjoy your time spent at this beautiful and historic piece of Virginia.
