Spanish Moss doesn't usually come to mind when considering Virginia's landscape, yet there's one state park in particular that boasts this unmistakable coastal feature. Surrounded by swamps, beaches, giant oaks, and saltwater, you might think you've been transported to South Carolina's Lowcountry. Yet all this can be enjoyed right here in Virginia at First Landing State Park. Here's more on how you might spend a day at this breathtaking Virginia state park.
With over 2,700 acres of property to enjoy, First Landing State Park is a nature enthusiast's dream come true. It's historically significant too, as this was the first landing site of English settlers in 1607.
Long before the English arrived, Native Americans expertly navigated the waters of the Chesapeake Bay in their canoes. When you arrive at the park today, you'll be spellbound by the alluring presence of the water in its many forms: ocean, bay, and swamps.
Complete with cypress groves, live oaks, Spanish moss, and boardwalk trails, First Landing State Park is truly a world of its own.
According to legend, the cypress swamps of First Landing served as an important source of fresh water during the War of 1812.
The park was established in 1933 when many of its trains and features were built by an African-American Civilian Conservation Corps. Despite its title as Virginia's most-visited state park, you'll still have a profound sense of peace and solitude when you visit.
Perhaps one of the most noteworthy features of the park is the presence of Spanish moss in Virginia. The nearly tropical climate of this swampland makes an ideal spot for Spanish moss to flourish.
In fact, First Landing State Park is largely considered to be the northernmost point where you'll find Spanish moss growing.
When you visit First Landing, you'll want to enjoy the parks 20+ miles of hiking trails, many of which showcase the coastal view.
Be sure to bring your camera, too, as you're likely to spot beautiful wildlife in the park.
If the conditions are just right, you might even be lucky to spot a swamp rainbow! Learn more about this beautiful Virginia natural phenomenon.
